Letter to the Media

13th April 2006

Respected Sir

SUB: The recently proposed reservations in the IIT’s and IIM’s

This memorandum is from more than 1 lakh people in Bangalore whose views we have collected from all over the city about the recently proposed reservation for Other Backward Classes in the IIT’s and IIM’s. On analysing these views we find that the proposition of Mandal II to provide for 49.5% reservations in the IIT’s and IIM’s will have innumerable un-rectifiable repercussions oh the country as a whole, especially in Educational, Social and Political fields.

The following are the disastrous consequences of this decision.

1) For decades, the IIT’s and the IIM’s have been considered as one of the top institutions world over, but with these reservations the high quality output of the IIT’s and IIM’s will drastically reduce.
This will also bring back the caste system, since the first question an interviewer will ask is whether the candidate got into the institution through reservation or merit.
Moreover the cream of meritorious students will be driven abroad of the country due to the lack of good education resulting in a brain drain, something that is already plaguing our country.

2) Today, India finds itself in a race for development, and has dreams of becoming a superpower. China also finds itself in a similar situation but the manner in which it tackles this is such that the scope for reservation is reduced and a uniform platform is created where merit is the deciding criteria. India is going down a path that will result in reservation in every sphere of life, and when caste and creed are the basis for everything from getting into college, to getting a job as opposed to merit, the entire countries productivity will be adversely affected

3) Reservation is like a slow poison for the OBC’s, as it makes them complacent, and also confident of the fact that they don’t need to work very hard to get into a premier institution. This creates a situation where the OBC’s are paralysed without reservations and the scope for removal of reservations is completely, thus making the quota system a self-perpetuating one that hurts everyone.

For the genuine improvement of the OBC’s setting up of required infrastructure is of key importance. If they are given the same quality of primary education as those of the general category, at government expense, they will be able to compete on an equal footing. The government should start giving scholarships, and funding the education of bright students. This way, those who do get into institutions like IIT and IIM will not have to great a problem dealing with the curriculum. When OBC's are thrust into these premier institutions, it is a well-documented fact that they find it hard to cope. The government should be focussing on providing a good base to students so that they can compete on the same level, rather than displacing able, meritorious students who have the required skill sets, with those that don’t.

It is also imperative to note that those people who are of a "backward" class, are not always backward. It is no longer a strict fact that everyone of lower class is economically backward as well. The government should realize that its duty is to uplift the economically backward, irrespective of caste or religion. Not doing so is in fact, discrimination against those who need this help. The worst affected by this are those general category students who are not financially well off, because they get absolutely no help from the government. And moreover, as mentioned before, this upliftment should not be done by implementing a quota, but should instead be improved educational infrastructure at every level.

Yesterday 22.5% Today 49.5% Tomorrow 99.5%
And today’s majority becomes a minority.

The following questions still remain:

1) Was the increase in reservations included in the election manifesto
for the last general elections?
The truth is that it wasn’t. Aren’t millions of people being cheated in this process?

2) The IIT’s and IIM’s were started soon after India became a republic
with aid from countries like USA, Germany, Russia etc. Since then
population of the country has increased dramatically but the country has
not catered to the increased requirements and the number of IIT’s or
IIM’s or institutions of similar calibre has been very limited in comparison with the population. How then can the government fiddle with the education in these premier institutions?

3) How does a country progress when only 50% of the students in its top institutions have the requisite criteria of being the best? Is it possible to win an Olympics gold medal in 100 meters race by running only 50 meters just because he/she is not fit to go all the way? Or will the government ask for reservations even there??

From this analysis, the conclusion drawn is that the government has been extremely thoughtless and unjust in its decision.
The youth of Bangalore will express their voice through a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan on 17th April. We hope to correct this injustice with the help of the media, and anyone who agrees that this proposal goes against the basic concept of justice.

Thanking you.
Yours truly

I challenge the concerned jokers to go ahead with 50% Reservation for not only students but also for teaching staff. Its better that Government builds one more IIT and IIM and call them RIIT and RIIM (R stands for you know what) and let others live in peace and maintain their standards. RIIT and RIIM may be put under AICTE for added glory. It will be wiser for the government to offer the best of education from primary education and make them face the world rather than give them feel of artificial security by reservation.

The Choice is Clear:

The terminology to refer handicapped persons have been changed to Physically challenged persons. Why cannot the SC ST BC OBC XYZ be called Economically challenged persons. That will atleast give an apparent feeling of casteless society. The other suggestion is categorize society into BPL and APL meaning Below Poverty Line and Above Poverty Line and tax the APL to pay for BPL. There are thousand intelligent ways of addressing the problem and one idiotic way i.e reservation based on caste lines.

IITs and IIMs will remain Institutions of the government by the government and for the government. One day MHRD may passa resolution stating that each MP is entitled for an IIT or IIM seat as the MPs are serving the nation. On the contrary take the case of BITS Pilani. In the year 2000, BITS Pilani put up a campus at DUBAI. In the year 2004, BITS Pilani commissioned a campus at Goa. In the year 2007 BITS Pilani is spearheading a campus at Hyderabad. Name one IITor IIM which broke the governmental shell and did something like BITS Pilani could do. Every one knows the famous IIM and IIT wanting to set up a Sing apore Campus. Well the song was over long back. We are left only with the National Anthem.

Guys ! This reservation is not a small issue, it is a phenomenon of allowing, protecting and promoting underperformance. If the government succeeds in implementing quota in private education, it will definitely bring quota in Private Job sector.

Its effect would be that our quality will go down and foreign companines would stop giving their projects to Indian companies. All the much talked buoyancy of Indian Economy will go away.

Hence, i request everyone who is reading this to participate in protest against this policy.

We need great co-ordination if we want to succeed. For it is necessary to form an online group first where we can discuss things. I have created this yahoo group solely for this purpose. Please join here and ask your friends also to join so that we can spread nation wide awareness. Yahoo group link :

Hello. Prompt how to get acquainted with the girl it to me to like. But does not know about it
I have read through one history
Each of you has your personal story; it is your history. Keeping a diary or writing your feelings in a special notebook is a wonderful way to learn how to think and write about who you are -- to develop your own identity and voice.

People of all ages are able to do this. Your own history is special because of your circumstances: your cultural, racial, religious or ethnic background. Your story is also part of human history, a part of the story of the dignity and worth of all human beings. By putting opinions and thoughts into words, you, too, can give voice to your inner self and strivings.

A long entry by Anne Frank on April 5, 1944, written after more than a year and a half of hiding from the Nazis, describes the range of emotions 14-year-old Anne is experiencing:

". . . but the moment I was alone I knew I was going to cry my eyes out. I slid to the floor in my nightgown and began by saying my prayers, very fervently. Then I drew my knees to my chest, lay my head on my arms and cried, all huddled up on the bare floor. A loud sob brought me back down to earth, and I choked back my tears, since I didn't want anyone next door to hear me . . .

"And now it's really over. I finally realized that I must do my school work to keep from being ignorant, to get on in life, to become a journalist, because that's what I want! I know I can write. A few of my stories are good, my descriptions of the Secret Annex are humorous, much of my diary is vivid and alive, but . . . it remains to be seen whether I really have talent . . .

"When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that's a big question, will I ever be able to write something great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer? I hope so, oh, I hope so very much, because writing allows me to record everything, all my thoughts, ideals and fantasies.

"I haven't worked on Cady's Life for ages. In my mind I've worked out exactly what happens next, but the story doesn't seem to be coming along very well. I might never finish it, and it'll wind up in the wastepaper basket or the stove. That's a horrible thought, but then I say to myself, "At the age of 14 and with so little experience, you can't write about philosophy.' So onward and upward, with renewed spirits. It'll all work out, because I'm determined to write! Yours, Anne M. Frank

For those of you interested in reading some of Anne Frank's first stories and essays, including a version of Cady's Life, see Tales From the Secret Annex (Doubleday, 1996). Next: Reviewing and revising your writing
